Preparation of Irumudi Kettu

The pilgrimage to Sabarimala Temple places exceptional importance on the Guru (spiritual guide), more than most other temple traditions in India. Every devotee begins the vratham (austerity period) only after receiving guidance and blessings from a Guru Swamy. The Guru is regarded as a living embodiment of Lord Ayyappa, guiding the pilgrim in discipline, devotion, and self-control. Rituals like preparing and tying the Irumudikettu can only be performed under the Guru's supervision. The Guru also leads the group throughout the yatra, ensuring adherence to spiritual practices and unity among devotees. This deep dependence on the Guru highlights that the Sabarimala pilgrimage is not just temple worship, but a guided path of inner transformation.

Pre-requirements

  • Must have observed vratham (austerity)
  • Wear mala and follow discipline
  • Preparation should be done under a Guru Swami

Preparation Setup

Choose a clean, sanctified place (home or temple)

Place:

  • Photo/idol of Ayyappa
  • Lamp (deepam) lit
  • All Irumudi items arranged neatly

Devotees sit facing east, chanting "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa"

Preparing Ney Thenga (Ghee Coconut)

Steps:

  • Select a mature coconut
  • Make a small hole ("kannu")
  • Drain coconut water completely
  • Fill with pure ghee
  • Seal the hole with:
    • Cork or piece of coconut shell
    • Cloth + wax (traditionally)

This represents:

  • Coconut → human body
  • Ghee → soul (Atman)
  • Offering → surrender to God

Filling the Munmudi (Front Pouch)

Items are placed in a specific order:

  • Ney thenga (main offering)
  • Other coconuts
  • Rice
  • Aval, malar
  • Jaggery
  • Turmeric, kumkum
  • Camphor, incense
  • Betel leaves, arecanut
  • Dakshina (coins)

All items are for offering to Ayyappa

Filling the Pinmudi (Rear Pouch)

Minimal personal items:

  • Food (simple)
  • Water (small quantity)
  • Towel / essentials

Represents worldly needs carried lightly

Tying the Irumudi

Both pouches are tied securely with cloth

Guru Swami performs:

  • Prayer
  • Blessing
  • Final knot tied while chanting "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa"

Placing on Head (Kettu Nirakkal Ritual)

  • Guru Swami places Irumudi on devotee's head
  • Devotee prostrates (namaskaram)

From this moment:

  • Irumudi is treated as sacred
  • Should not be placed on bare ground

Important Observances After Preparation

Always keep Irumudi on:

  • Head or
  • Elevated place (cloth/wood)
  • Maintain purity (thought, word, action)
  • Chant continuously during journey

At Sabarimala:

  • Break Ney Thenga
  • Offer ghee for abhishekam to Lord Ayyappa
  • Other items offered in temple
