A traditional pilgrimage to Sabarimala Temple is far more than the final darshan—it is a deeply sacred yatra marked by a series of spiritually significant stages, each symbolizing a step in one's inner transformation. Among these, the Irumudikettu holds the highest reverence; it is an essential and sacred offering bundle carried by devotees. Without the Irumudikettu, pilgrims are not permitted to ascend the divine Pathinettam Padi (the holy 18 steps) of Sabarimala, making it an integral part of the pilgrimage's spiritual discipline and tradition.

The Irumudi Kettu

The Irumudi Kettu is a sacred twin-compartment offering carried by pilgrims to Sabarimala Temple for the darshan of Lord Ayyappa. It is divided into:

  • Munmudi (front pouch) for temple offerings
  • Pinmudi (rear pouch) for personal use

Munmudi (Offerings for the Deity)

Core Offering:

  • Ghee-filled coconut (Ney Thenga)
  • Ghee used for abhishekam

Other Offerings:

  • Coconut (whole, for breaking)
  • Rice (raw rice for offering)
  • Aval (flattened rice)
  • Malar (puffed rice)
  • Jaggery (sharkara)
  • Turmeric powder
  • Kumkum
  • Betel leaves & arecanut
  • Camphor (karpooram)
  • Incense sticks (agarbathi)
  • Wicks (for lamps)
  • Small coins/dakshina

Optional / Temple-specific Items:

  • Honey
  • Ghee packets (extra)

Pinmudi (For Personal Use During Journey)

  • Drinking water (small quantity)
  • Food items (simple – like aval, jaggery, etc.)
  • Coconut pieces
  • Towel / cloth
  • Basic personal essentials

Note: Should be minimal—pilgrimage emphasizes simplicity

Important Ritual Rules

  • Irumudi must be prepared under a Guru Swami
  • Once tied, it is considered sacred and must not be placed on the ground.
  • Carried on the head throughout the journey
  • Required for climbing the 18 sacred steps (Pathinettam Padi)
